My MG Custom Map

    Just a few ideas. You say this campaign starts in Hollywood and that the amount of trees is demanding lots of space. First of all I always thought L4D should have a campaign in SoCal so bravo to you, such a great idea because it gives you a unique and varied choice of landscapes. We could start out at the Navy base in Long Beach then go to Hollywood, then up to Mt. San Jacinto 10,834 ft which is actually taller than Pikes Peak at 14,000, then take the tramway down into the desert of Palm springs where there is nearby 29Palms Marine corp base, then maybe off to Vegas for a little casino action and Area 51 where all the really weird stuff is. :mrgreen:

    I really like that idea. But climbing a mountain is hard to make the bots do for some reason (Honor, any advice why? xD), which is why I dug a cave into Mt. Marvelous Gaming. The campaign was originally set to take place in Hollywood (never thought about Vegas or Area 51, nice). Though I think someone already made an Area 51 map on L4DMaps... Currently, it's just an island and you make your way through it and set an SOS call.

    Yes, it is a whole campaign. Right now I only have one huge map but I am looking to break it up into separate parts. I cannot solely run this this on a server, because it's just one campaign. If all goes well then I might take up a bigger campaign project and then eventually build a MG Custom Maps server. If not, then at least we have a good-looking map in our name (unlike them at #1).

    There's no guarantee as with anything. There's always a risk. I'm sure people will try it if they see a picture of the map, but then again it's a big map and there's a risk that people don't want to wait so long for it to download. And it's one campaign.

    Aahhhh why only US cities? Why not Amsterdam or Paris? :)

    I would love to see Las Vegas btw, shooting zombies on the strip would be awesome lol but that's probably a huge amount of work.

    am all for custom maps and it looks good from the pics, just a few things will you be able to get the same lighting in hammer that you have in max? with all the tree's it will kill some peoples fps in game which wont make them happy and probally just stop playing it, am all for the custom maps but , you have all ready tryed a few times to make a custom map sever, what makes you think this one will be popular?

    The last try at a custom vs server didnt go well and nobody even came other than a few admins and players , then when things went wrong like the server crashed or whatever it was cant mind :lol: , people never botherd coming back, about the bots not going up the mountain it will be do with how the bots navigate the map, i was making a level in hammer and i had the same problem they wouldnt even move out of the safehouse, but there could be many reason why they didnt move on my level, i think it might have been to do with how i had made the floor or something , though am not 100% on that so dont take my word for it.

    anyway good luck on getting it made and getting people to come and play it, i will download it, but not with the size its at 2gb for a 3 map campaign or is it more now?

    The way I see it, this is our own custom map, so that's different. Even if not a lot people play it it's still good promotional stuff so you can't just compare it with the previous attempts. Name one server that has his own custom campaign?

    Besides, the last attempt failed miserably because bunny changed to a new map every day, sometimes every 8 hours. That was besides the 200 other bugs that server had. Why do u think I shut it down?

    We had some successes as well, with helms deep and dawn of the dead (Survival / coop) so we'll just let it run on 8 players and when demand increases we can always increase the number of slots.

    I was think seperate maps or panic events. Train from Long Beach to Hollywood, Helecopter from Hollywood to Mountain top, tram from mountain top to Palm Springs, dune buggies from Palm Springs to 29 Palms, armored Personell carrier to Las Vegas, car to Area 51, flying saucer finally.

    I love the idea of Paris or Amsterdam but he has already started in Hollywood and there is no greater variety of terrain than California albiet my scenario takes us to Nevada as well. Ocean Beach, Luxurious City, Mountains, a tram escape that has never been done, Opulent Desert City, Casino and hooker zombies, then the secret underground facility that is left open to the imagination of it's creator. :mrgreen:

    lol Vulcan, it was originally set to take place in hollywood, however now it takes place on an island. Modeling environments is hard, especially game environments. So I figured I'll make a crysis style map. Vegetation modeling is easier than city modeling. I suck at AutoCAD, and I don't know how hammer will take resource intensive maps, so this first one will start off simple (of course relatively, island maps aren't child's play either) :) Then we can move on to Paris and Vegas. I really do like your idea though! It's comin'.

    Seeker, I understand, even I wouldn't want to download a huge 1.2 GB map. It won't be at the end. I am getting rid of tons of trees which won't be accessible. The Island will still look huge with lots of vegetation, but distant trees will be removed (most of them you can't see anyways). Thanks for your feedback :)

    Roger that LiteHawk, now if there was only a way to set traps like pits with spikes, swinging logs on ropes, rope snairs. Gotta have an entrance behind a waterfall, rope bridge, a place where the cannibals ate, ship wreckage, treasure chests can have pills and needles. Ah well, just pipe dreaming but the idea of a new map has my mind racing! :mrgreen:

    hey

    i would have thought making a city would have been far easyer than making an isalnd due to if its a city all you need to do is make different sized boxes then texture them to look like buildings where as if you make a isalnd you have to model it so it looks like a moutain( as in you need to make all the different points for it in max, well moving the vertex's to make the shape of it) look at no mercy its nothing more than loads of boxes to make the buildings up, hell even some of them could just 3 plains and nothing more no roof no back to the building due to they wont be seen.

    still kkudos to you for going for a island which to me is much more difficult to make than a city

    Oh man! I love your ideas Vulcan!!! xD Awesome. I'll add a waterwall that covers the entrance to the cave and a bridge leading to the clearing past a pit of pikes. The treasure chest Honor will have to work out if he wants. Also, Honor, if I animate a waterfall in 3DS Max, will Hammer be able to import it? A texture transformation perhaps?

    Thanks Seeker. Well, cities aren't that hard, but I have a bunch of tree models made in my modeling class so it's easier to reuse than make. Cities are up next, but what scares me is Vegas. That's going to take weeks.

    I want to go all out with this. And by ALL OUT; I do mean ALL OUT. Every admin reading this has to download this map when it is eventually released ----> get the server populated ------> get regular MG players to download ------> l4dmaps.com users join ------> they return ---> the cycle returns to the start. Keep a spare 2GB free :)

    OK, so the plan is this?
    • Start in a Navy base in Long Beach [/*:m:34ovkjkz]

    Seems a little extrovert to me. A few questions: How long is each map going to be? The whole campaign will run how many minutes? Do you need some help - maybe we could get in some advanced designers that are willing to do little jobs for free? What about RAM, loads of vegetation=huge lags, how are we going to avoid that without buying a SUPER gaming rig? Most campaigns are relatively lateral, I think this one should be one of those "Get off the island!" campaigns.

    Legend that was just my idea, I think he is just sticking with the island this time. Hopefully next time we will go to Vegas for hooker zombies.

    Yes, it's just the island for now. The campaign is a long one, since it is very easy to get lost. The only boundaries are the water. There are signs posted on trees every now and then to lead you in the right path, but besides that, it is so, so easy to get lost. And that's the first part of the island. The second part will take the survivors on a clear-cut sandy path across the island with trees on both sides. Avoid wandering the forests (hunters =P). The 3rd part is a cave panic event. The last part is the finale where you mysteriously find a bunch of med kits. The campaign is hard, no doubt, but there are plenty of health packs and treasure chests filled with pills along the way so it's shouldn't be excessive.

    Just imagine wandering through a dense forest, dodging trees, killing zombies and saving friends. IDK, the graphics are intense and even my PC lags like hell at 10 fps. Regular PCs won't last till I find a way to reduce graphic intensity.

    Anyone know how to export 3DS Max content into hammer?

    looks very very nice. especially for the first MG custom map :D

    but i do think 2GB will be very big for people to download. luckely these days 2GB is nothing with harddrives with 1-2TB hehe.
    but looking at the people playing on MG servers i do think some will have problems downloading it.
    believe we can download this map straight from a MG server instead from l4d2maps.com etc

    Cant wait till the map comes out so i can take a look at the nice Marvelous Gaming sign in the mountain :D

    Ps. wrote you an idea i had for a map litehawk. maybe it can be a success aswell

    From what i read online there is no way to export from max into hammer , the number one reason i found was that max doesnt support the vpk format, so if its going to be made, you will have to do it all in Hammer
