It's the single-most important album in the alternative music movement. Bands like the Smashing Pumpkins attribute 100% of their success to My Bloody Valentine. The sub-genre "shoegaze" was started by this album and band, also. There were 15 or so MBV spinoffs, many of which were good, but none of which were MBV (except maybe the band Medicine - Shot Forth Self Living.)

The unfortunate thing about this album is that simply put: no one gets it. By the time the track "Sometimes" climaxes, the whole thing makes sense.

Shoegaze is named as such cuz the bands stare down at their instruments, or shoes as it goes, while making their trademark sound: Purposeful distortion, "white-knuckle" guitar, shimmering sounds, breathy angelic vocals against a cacophany of noises.

The album came out in 1992 or so, but they split, then reunited around the time Lost In Translation came out. That's one of my favorite films and it was a huge moment for me when they played my favorite song of theirs at the most important part of the movie. Burned out 5 copies of the CD, never left my "#1 without a doubt" place in my entire music collection.

Again, the sad thing is, people tend to simply not get it when they listen to it.

Raise the treble a little higher than the bass... and give it a shot. By track 5 (When You Sleep,) the effect should kick in.

Track 4 is hypnotic, especially when they sneakily switch up the beat-loop at the end. Track 6 and on is just bliss.
