    RAID 10 works like that (damn you, transparent png!):

    With this setup, the server could survive if at least one disk of each RAID 1 is still working. So at least one disk may fail, and chances are that if two disks fail, they won't be from the same RAID 1, so even with two disks gone, in most cases you'll still be up.
    md raid supports both hot spares (if a disk fails, md will pick a hot spare and start rebuilding on it automatically - so if you have 5 disks, you will be even more safe) and hot-swapping dead disks (where you have to add the disk to the md array manually).
    So there should be no crashes or even reboots involved.

    Ah yes you're right, so even with only 4 disks it would keep running right?

    Only with RAID 10 I'll lose half of the capacity, that's not a big issue though since that would still give me 1 TB.

    Ah well, changing it now would mean a full re-installation. I might go for RAID10 though on the DB/webserver with the HW Raid controller :)
