Intel Cpu i3-540 s1156 VS Intel core 2 quad s775?

    Since you were ignoringm e in the chat, if anybody knows which of the following is better, please let mek now

    1)Intel CPU Core i3-540 3.06 GHz Box (SOCKET 1156)

    2)Intel CPU Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5 GHz (SOCKET 775)

    Tom's Hardware has annoying ads but it's CPU Charts for 2010 include the Core 2 Quad Q8300 you listed and a Core i3-530 2.93 GHz so you can compare them for many benchmarks including L4D2 :)

    Personally, I'd go with the i3 if they're comparably priced, and even if the i3 is a little more. Here's a discussion of it that pretty much says what I'd argue:

    Since there was no core 2 quad 8300 i took core 2 quad 8400 (2.66Ghz) for comparison and still core i3 outperforms it,have a look at it...

    I thought core I3 had only 2 cores and core2quad 4.

    That's right, i3 has only 2 cores but because of that they can lift the speed to 3.06 ghz which is not possible on a quadcore cpu due to the heat.

    Besides, the socket 775 is an ancient chipset so I think if you have a core i3 on a 1156 chipset it outperforms a core2quad on a 775 chipset.

    Yup, Marvel is right all that. Because of hyperthreading the two cores in an i3 act like four cores without generating the amount of heat the older quad cores do.

    Out of topic, but I recently purchased a PC with Intel Core i7 920 and a AMD Phenom X6 1090T for my old AMD desktop. Between the two, I find the Core i7 to run a little better. Both can overclock considerably, so my question is: anyone know the optimum voltage and speed for these CPUs?
