    Compare:

    Source Engine

This long awaited map has been in the works for almost as long as I can remember. This is Source Engine mapping at full throttle:

    CryEngine 3

Then compare that with a CryEngine map:

Crysis 2 map in low-res settings. This thing's LOW RES is like Source Engine's High Resolution on drugs.

I would say go with CryEngine. I think it would be a lot more fun and be more realistic. I also think it will attract more people, even if it can't be played as easily on old computer.

I agree, theres not enough zombie games with amazing graphics!!! thats wat makes an amazing zombie game in the first place. Its what got dead island popular because the graphics looked amazing and everyone was like OMG OMG. Once u beat the game though it got boring cause it was the same thing over and over. Besides I really want an mmorpg with good graphics and gameplay, so far havent really found anything lol. Graphics arent everything but its a plus to be amazed by it, just my 2 cents

I'll be using CryEngine 3 for now because I found my way around the C++ and UI (about time). The code is humongous-- there are over 190,000 lines of code in that unmodified engine demo I showed you guys. Learning to modify the engine for our needs will take some more time, but I'm getting this. This is really exciting-- more than it was back when I started learning Source. Maybe when Valve decides to update their six year old 2007 engine to modern standards, we can switch to Source again, as I have that covered from start-to-end. However, for now, we will use CryEngine I guess, mainly because of the advanced flash/Scaleform HUD support and graphics.

Some of the things about DayZ I didn't like:
    - Not being able to cook food on the stove. Plus, all inventory items spawn on the floor at random places instead of shelves, drawers, etc. Yeah, we can all have a campfire, but that's not very realistic when there are gas-based stoves everywhere.

There should be survivors out there who are engineers, doctors, architects etc who can choose to specialize in a field when they spawn. Then they can help construct buildings, aid other players (e.g. surgery), and control power plants and such. This will make the game more interesting, since some people can work as engineers to keep a power plant running, others doctors to perform surgery and diagnose severely ill players, others who can work together construct buildings and walls, human-controlled military, etc.

    - Bugged zombies (this will get fixed I bet). I think they are going to fix the walk-through-walls and point entity based damage, but seriously, the AI is pretty crude. Sometimes I see zombies walking around on the docks, and what's worse, there's no way to lose them once they are on your ass. If DayZ really aimed at realism, then your player's speed should change based on the weight of the objects in their inventory. If you drop items you are carrying while running, you should move faster (since you are lighter) and thus be able to outrun the zombies (at a cost of losing your items).

    - Multi-step process after you die to re-spawn (confusing for new players). Why must I hit escape, click Abort, then click Disconnect, then click Continue, and then click OK? The server should kick me out automatically so I can reconnect.

    - Terrible server browser. There's no way to view connected players, no method of entering manual IP addresses, and no option to host custom lobbies with friends (and custom lobbies aren't saved to the hive btw).

    - Not being able to locate your friends. Many times, DayZ is no fun when playing alone. There are a few people who may enjoy the lonely experience (it's more scary), but it's more fun with friends. You should be able to see your friends' names regardless of distance (only if they are on your friends list) IMO. That way, at least you can locate them no matter where you spawn.

    - No gamemodes-- all servers are the same which gets boring after a while. There should be different modes like Coop (no pvp), Versus (with pvp), Survival, Scavenge, and Realism, all with its separate stats. If you ever played Halo 3 or ODST, when you play on Xbox Live, you will see that each gamemode (e.g. Team Slayer or FFA) has its own TrueSkill measurement, and the highest of all the gamemodes would be your trueskill.

    - No control for the server admins. Cmon, give the people who host your servers just a little breathing room. Don't strangle them with a noose. Give them the flexibility to make their servers a little bit unique (which would go into the Modded/Separate Config Hive) so not every server is the exact same as the last.

    - Rude devs <---- that was why I started this project in the first place. At least MG has more caring and generous admins :)

    - Crude AI (sound/sight systems did not take into account weather and shadows). I've stated this before, but I'll say it again. One time, it was raining hard as hell, and I couldn't see two feet in front of me. Guess what was able to hear me through all that rain and thunder? Zombies! The AI is so stupid... It's not supposed to be able to hear/see you when gallons of rain are splattering all over the place with dense fog!

    - Everyone looks the same. Not surprisingly, though, since it's only a mod. Plague, on the other hand, will let you customize your character's appearance, body style, skin tone, etc. This one is going to be a killer to design, but it'll come probably in the Beta stage.

Things about DayZ that I liked:
    - Arma II Graphics. However, CryEngine will surpass that easily. Even a rock looks epic on CryEngine.
    - The fear factor and lack of control of the unknown is why DayZ is so popular. Plague is built around the same concept.
    - Bandits. As much as they piss me off, they are more scary than the zombies themselves. The nice thing here is that banditry is one way you can maximize your trueskill (by playing versus) in Plague. Another way is by surviving for a long, long time in Coop. There are multiple ways you can increase your TS...

    I'm tired of typing :P

i dont know if i can realy help here. but i had bought a program called Tree Maker years ago. it creates trees and bushes. and other nature stuff.
also i have bought alot of gametextures and syboxes frome different styles. like horror.scifi.fantasy/etc (these can be used commercialy)

just for fun. i made this model pack a long time ago and released it on an another forum.
it was a FPS engine. it was my first time.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4WaNFdLavs

I bought 44 model packs for this FPS engine. including all sort of weapons/characters/vehicles/models.etc.
so if you need something like models or textures. i can give it a try and upload things for you in private.
you only have it to make it game ready yourself.

    demo of some models

All that stuff is very cool! I'm sure we'll have tons of uses for many of those models; I'll forward those video links to the environment mappers. CrazyRabbit can see this thread but our other mapper can't, so I'll forward him the video links. As for the skyboxes, they are excellent, but the CryEngine uses a dynamic sky (e.g. day/night cycle).

So, for those of you who want to test drive CryEngine, download the CryEngine SDK below, and extract the zip anywhere. Navigate to Bin64 or Bin32 and click on Launcher.exe. You should be able to play that unmodified demo (as seen in the video). If for some reason your graphics card doesn't support DirectX 11 very well (or for some reason it didn't fallback on the D3D9 driver), simply create a shortcut to Launcher.exe, right-click, Properties, and add -DX9 to the end of the target name (after the quotes). Double click on the shortcut to start the engine in DX9 mode.

It's not really an Xbox title; it's a Xbox Live Arcade title. There are many games like that in the works. There is also this:
    http://www.crydev.net/newspage.php?news=93947

... and many similar games being worked on by UDK developers.

Nice, Choco :) And Stefe, you must be playing on all High settings in that beast of a computer of yours :P

Even a new mapper can create some astonishing content-- unparalleled even by those with years of experience on the Source Engine. That just goes to show how much the graphic engines have changed from 2007 (HL2 engine behind L4D2) to now. L4D2 uses a modified slightly newer engine (I think 2009), but that was simply to add Mac support. The core really hasn't changed.

Atm, I'm working on a new UI. I would love some Photoshop help after it's done :P

Adding on... there is a revolution about to take place with regards to games created by CryEngine. In CE1 (CryEngine 1) SDK, people couldn't even mod without a Hex editor. CE2 SDK, they added a basic editor. CE3 SDK, that editor is really advanced + introduction of Scaleform. In the future (CE4 SDK), they are planning to add very advanced UI development kits along with client modding support with various engine/network-based multiplayer enhancements. It's getting better and better and a CryEngine developer community is slowly but surely getting larger. We are jumping on the wagon at a very early state, which is very good for us :P

Tried the map editor a bit..

Way too complicated for me at the moment, xD gotta study more of this.

But yeah, u can edit HUD and other stuff from brushes and you can basically add almost any 3d model made with any 3d modeling program.. thats what i understood so far.
