    Hello all!

I know you've seen many of these in the past few weeks, but I thought I would make my own.

I am leaving for college soon, and I am getting a new laptop for it. I would like the MG community's help choosing one online. I would like it to be able to play games with amazing graphics on high settings, but I also don't want it to be TOO thick because I have to carry it to class every day.

I honestly have no idea where to start, but I would prefer to spend less than $2000 USD (that is my max budget planned, including taxes).

    Thanks MG!

Forget about portability when you want a gaming laptop. No way you can get a laptop the size of an ultrabook and run all games on max settings.

The Dell Alienware M17x looks interesting and it fits your budget :)

Not personally a fan of alienware; I had an M15x for a while, it was overpriced and never personally liked the aesthetics (I know some people like coloured LEDs and flashing lights on their machine, personal preference really). The biggest issue (no pun intended) was the size and weight, you're unlikely to find a gaming laptop much under 3kg but dell like adding another 1 or 2 on top.

After first year at Uni, I decided to sell my laptop and got both a custom desktop and a cheaper laptop instead. Not practical for everyone, especially if you live in halls (it wouldn't have been a viable option in my first year) but something to consider.

Get an Origin EON11-S and an external monitor for your dorm and you'll get the best of both worlds. Or an EON15-S / EON17 if you don't mind the extra weight (any of these will be far better than an Alienware): http://www.originpc.com/gaming/laptops/

Pretty much half the price of the competition with similar hardware.

Go for battery life & performance..

Ultra light and powerful laptop is as good as paperweight if it only lasts for 2 hours even at normal usage..

The first picture is what I have (had!) I had the ASUS Republic Of Gamer's (ROG) G74Sx. It came w/ the stereoscopic goggles, mouse, everything.

THE BEST THING ABOUT THOSE COMPUTERS IS THE COOLING. (No joke, they advertise it as "blow it out the rear,") so it's always cool. I could game all day, literally, and it be just fine.

Newegg.com had a great deal on it, too.

My problem was that I spilt on the keyboard, frying the touchpad, and voiding the Replacement Warranty I had. Strangely, they had a hard time finding a mobo replacement locally. Paying for direct service from ASUS is impossibly expensive.

I can not say how much I loved this machine. Swear, no matter which aspect you're looking at it from, the Republic of Gamer's series is aces.

I don't know much about the competitor Alienware line. I believe Christopher (purplepuppet) is an MSI fan and either has one or built one. I would ask him about that.

But if you don't plan on spilling a drink on it like a dumbass, definitely definitely DEFINITELY go for the Asus Republic of Gamer's edition computer. They actually refer to it as a "desktop replacement unit" in some cases cuz it can handle process hog games liek Grand Theft Auto that no laptop can really handle.
