Points Reloaded - Limiting server access to certain levels.

Because of all the discussion going on about whether we should limit certain servers to certain levels I opened this topic to discuss a possible future change for Points Reloaded and came up with an idea which should balance the game more.

Of course there are pros and cons to every idea so that's why I would like to discuss it in public to see what you all think about it.

Remember this is just an idea, in fact most of this is me thinking out loud so it's not something we're going to make anytime soon because it should be worked out very carefully to prevent any negative side affects on which I'll come back later in this post.

    So how can it work?

The idea is to have certain servers which only allow players with a certain level. Like Extreme COOP should only be allowed to play on by e.g. level 40+, or maybe level 60+ or anything else I don't know yet that's open for discussion. Now this idea is not new since there is discussion over this already.

My new idea came from the 'Reserved specator redirect' plugin which you can see here: http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=1211665

The idea is not to make it for what it has been written for, but adjust it to the PR system, so it goes like this:

    • A new player, or a low leveled one (below XX) joins the high ranked server.

    • He gets a message:

Your current level is too low to play on this server. Please join our other server first to gain more level, skills and upgrades. Press F3 to connect now.

    • User presses F3 and bam he will directly connect to the low ranked server (i.e. if it has free slots).

Now this should work the other way around as well. So say a level 50 player tries to connect to a level <40 server, he'll get the same message, except he will be offered to connect to the high level server, like COOP Extreme.

Now, the pros and cons to this idea (please add more if you know some):

    pros:

    • Servers will get more balanced obv. without us having something to do about it, it will be a fully automated balance system this way.

    • Low level players will play more, because they are eager to join the high level server to see what it's like. We all want to play at the top.

    • High level players won't bitch on low level players anymore (well, not as much, see cons) which makes low level players stay longer and gives them a chance to level up without getting bitched at the whole time, or even votekicked.

    • OPTIONAL TO PREVIOUS: We can disable votekicking on the low level server.

    cons:

    • People might get confused why they are not allowed to play on certain servers and start crying, or they might even feel offended because of it.

    • If we decide say, to make current coop easy <40 only, the difference between level 1 and 39 will still be much, same as the difference between level 41 and 165.

    • People need to press F3 to accept the reconnect offer (no workaround). I can imagine people will be like WTF is this, don't read the message and go play somewhere else. You know how people are they don't read, I know that from myself :D so this worries me the most, to not have full servers anymore because of this.

    • Additional to previous, there might be not enough high level players to guarantee an always crowded server to play on (EU/US). So it might get stuck at like 10/20 with a lot of bots, that worries me a bit as well although we can always find a workaround to this (auto kick bots) but the higher level requirement we make the less full it will be eventually so we need to find a real good balance level here, and we can't just say ok this server is like 70+ only without taking this into consideration.

    • On the high level server, we need to come up with a system to disable teamswitching, so that we always have balanced teams (e.g. 4vs4, or 8vs7 and not 1 survivor and 7 infected) and make it so that guild members will be always on the same team, switching would be prohibited. If you want to play with a friend, join or create a guild so you can. This would disable team stacking entirely so this con created a new pro ;)

The high level server should become our top rated server, with good teamwork and no abuse or annoyances like team stacking. It should become the server everybody wants to play on especially the low levels so we'll keep player flow to it.

Sorry this post is getting longer than I thought it would be (like always) but what do you think?

While I feel bad about disagreeing with this even though you spent so much time on this, I disagree.

I'll sum this up a lot because I need to pack for my vacation still, but lets see. First off, the level difference like you said is too much. Even if the lv was 70+ for the high server, that still means the lv 200 would own the lv 70. Next point, when I first joined the servers, I was completely lost for a while. I kept playing because I wanted to get as good as the high level players. They generally knew the rules and what to do, so as a lot level player, I could stick by them and they could help me. In this case, all the low levels would be stuck together, with no one to show them teamwork or the rules. Speaking of which, will the admins still be able to join both the low and high servers then? Final point in this post: rushing and XP. The rushing problem would come back here (Not that it really ever left). High level players only care about themselves and toasters. In the high servers, most people will completely ignore other players to just get the toasters they want, even if that means the other person would die. Low levels are all about XP, they would farm the shit out of all the low level servers.

But anyway, that is just my opinion. These servers are not perfect, so those who are on it have to live through the good times and the annoying time. :)

Usually im not interested in whats going on with new server mods, gameplays etc, but now i want to make public my little opionion.

as a high lvl (100, is that high level :P ?) i like to play on which server i want.
sometimes i like to play on a extreme, mostly on the lazy ones.
i like to help new players how it works and like also a game where you dont have to concentrate the whole time.
so when you dont allow the high level to play on the low level servers it would be a very drastic
restriction. i want to decide myself where i want to play..... O-)
    Point

PS. if i misunderstood something, so nvm then....lol

Yeah each idea has pros n cons and even though i'm not going to disagree with this idea but i have some concerns which chocobo has mentioned.

    1) If i'm not wrong then most if not all admins are above level 40 so will they still have the access to both types of servers?

    2) I agree with chocobo about low levels sticking to high levels because i used to follow around high levels too so i would survive but as chocobo mentioned about farming, if low levels farm their way upto the high level players server then they will have no skills of playing the game and will get owned constantly.

    3) But my main concern is, if the players are divided by their levels, will the servers still be full because i see loads of low levels playing on the PR servers during the early morning to afternoon so if they get moved to the low level servers then the high level servers may only have few players.

I think this level thing should be used on the Extreme servers or maybe coop for now because if it is moved to the VS servers then:

    1) The VS servers may not be full
    2) This would be kinda similar to guild where high level players will compete against eachother.

I have to admit, i do get annoyed at low level players myself from time to time but i would rather play with/against players than bots on the VS servers. If a spitter spits in the way then the bots just stand there and wait for the spit to go away and the spitter keeps spitting and sometimes the bots get killed on the spot by the spitters and other SI.

    My 2 cents

Ooki..i'll try to make it quick. As you know me, i can be very vocal and direct. but, here's my opinion.

On versus Servers -Pro level limitation

    1. Separating servers will keep most of the higher lvl players happy and will improve teamwork. Most of the high lvl players have their SI upgraded at least 75%. so strategies can be made. Player x and Y get the spiters cause they have sticky goo lvl 6, z and t get chargers...etc. Roles are defined and each one knows what they have to do. Low levels tend not to listen and do as they please. Do forgive me, but there aren't so many high lvl's willing to babysit a newbie till he gets up to where he can actually defend himself
    2. Low levels give crappy EXP/toasters. When I, or any other high lvl die as SI we usually give up a good toaster. i died and gave multi-toasters, a white one....etc...
    3. Most of the low levels aren't to much of a challenge. As Survivors, the low levels are so helpless. I actually love it when they throw mollys at a tank w/o even checking who's the tank and what lvl he is, and then "he's not burning OMG..cheats" or trying to melee a paranoia...
On Extreme COOP - PRO LEVEL LIMITATION

    • They are to weak, to slow, do to little damage to actually count to much. The spots that they occupy could be put to better use by a High lvl. 2-3 punches by a charger or a 3 seconds ride from a jockey and they are down, leaving them, and whoever comes to help vulnerable to attack...
    • most of them don't have the basic buffs. I mean come one, Crawl, Hidden Magnum, Knife, sometimes Speedy water and the self revive skill are absolutely necessary on this server.
    • They don't listen to indications...suggestions....
    • I'm not even going to start regarding the low levels picking ppl up with 30 health ....
    my 2 cents

I think that putting a level limit on VS is a good idea, because low levels tend to get scream at because of their lack of knowledge on the pr vs system.

As for the limit of extreme coop. Its kinda unfair, because all of us were a noob at some point in a game. How did we get to where we are right now? It was by playing with other players.Learning from higher levels. If we limit the players in coop then all we will have left is vetrean players and no new players.
Correct me if im wrong, the only thing extreme about the new coop server is that.
    1. Jockey instant incap.
    2.Boomer puke=massive horde
3.Smokers long distance grap* Im not sure if it is also in normal coop.
    Thats about it right?
Cause if I was a new player, I Would rather be able to shot a machine gun spitter then having to melee it in the normal coop.
Also if a new player wants to try a new coop, then let them.
Yes when new players pick me up and takes a long time/giving me 30 hp I will get kinda disappointed. However I'm glad that that person came and pick me up. If I was to put a limit on who can pick me up and who I will pick up, I don't think that I will have anymore friends in the end.

Sorry If this is all jumble up. I just woke up.

Just a side thought: Maybe a better shuffle thingy might fix it? I mean, the shuffle currently can throw 8 level <10 on one side while level 50+ can all be on the other team. Might be nice to have an equal amount of high/low levels on opposite teams! Kinda like playing baseball as a kid: one team would pick then the next team would pick etc. etc. Also, the current team scrambler doesn't wait long enough for everyone to load which might equal 7v10, etc.

If a limitation is begun, maybe the level cap is what is important? 40+ maybe? I do have to say a low level tank is annoying as hell (especially when all they do is TK) when the other team gets a tank that is high level.

Also, I noticed that extreme coop doesn't have bots. What is stopping VS from having bots? If it is 3v3 let it be 3v3...

IMO... Having a level 5 VS a level 90 is ridiculous. They really don't stand a chance@! As far as extreme goes, low levels get so scared they won't leave the saferoom! BUT then again everyone needs a chance to prove themselves! I have to say that it is FAR more annoying in VS compared to COOP, and only because teamplay is a much bigger deal in VS.

I don't think this should be applied to VS.

Why? Because even if we're high level, it doesn't mean our SI skills/upgrades/buffs are high level too, so a player could be lvl 150, upgraded survivor and spitter to the max, and spent the rest crafting or gambling, he's just as big a "newbie" as the new players.

Also, farmers are at every level, and I'd rather have a lvl 10 teammate rather than a lvl 100 farmer/stat whore.

However I like this idea a lot for the same pros marvel stated, but only on COOP/extreme, because we only concentrate on one aspect of PR: the survivor. Here's my point of view:

    1. If low level players want to play on Extreme, let them work for it. It's the next level, and they gotta level up a bit before having access to it. See it as a reward for their work and efforts in leveling.

    2. The normal COOP doesn't need a level restriction, anyone should be able to play... why? because higher levels prefer Extreme, and people like me don't mind playing with low levels on a normal COOP to help everyone out. This also counters a con I'll talk about later.

    3. If low levels want to discover EXTREME, they can do so during events, like HD or SB, get a taste of what's in for them once they reach like lvl 40 or 60.

There was one con, but if there are no level restrictions on PR COOP, then it solves the problem: If it was like, for lvl 40- only, how would admins go on to see what's going on and make sure it's clean of farmers/abusers/etc ? We'd also be blocked out because of our levels (most admins are high level).
Although if it was lvl 40-, farming wouldn't be such a big deal, I mean they only do get to lvl 40 before they get kicked out and left 4 dead in the extreme world.

But anyway, I want to be able to play on normal COOP too, with the low levels.

    Word of wisdom
just a warning: no flaming, this is an important discussion thread and I won't be merciful! xD

I don't think this should be applied anywhere.

It shouldn't be applied because like what many people have said already, level difference is too high. No matter what range of levels you allow, there'll always be a great difference in levels between the highest and lowest. Unless you get like a range of 20 levels (but that will obviously be wayyyy too many servers).
Putting all the low level and inexperienced players in one server would result in alot of problems like farming and burning medkits (because theres no one to teach) and very soon, in the high level server there'll be high levels who dont have the proper skills or play like noobs.
I hve been playing since VI, and so am familiar with MG. i used to HATE playing on PR versus (USA) because there were so many high levels and what i really hate the most was maxed out Dark Vomit. Since i was familiar with MG i went to look around and found the COOP server. I trained there first, maxed out survivor skills and started on infected skills then went to versus.

    My suggestions:
If you have a low level/ a bunch of low levels on your team, work around their weaknesses. Teach them. Sure, maybe they won't listen to you because they're stubborn or theres a language barrier.
But it cant be that they have no skills whatsoever... They have skills from normal servers. Some may apply here and some will not. For example, shoot the attacking SI while walking to the guy and if SI sill not dead, take out melee and kill. Some skills however, such as picking up a teamate ASAP, are not good here if you are low level. They just need the experience playing here, or someone to teach them. I remember someone saying on the forum, if I'm not wrong Youngblood, saying that teaching a person is really fun when they learn. Be a little more patient before just exclaiming, "OMG THIS GUY IS A NOOB, I'M GOING TO STOP PLAYING OR VOTEKICK THIS NOOB". Sometimes, teaching makes it more fun. Besides, if you teach someone, the person will have a good impression of MG servers an the community = more players.

Also, don't put a level limit, instead, give players in the COOP EXTREME AND USA VS servers a message (to everyone so you can save making a plugin) saying: "Too difficult for you? Try our normal COOP servers to familiarize yourself with the game and level up at the same time! Type !xxxx to connect to the server!" then the press F3 to accept thing will appear

    Just what i think :D

Low levels have the potential to become regular high level players on the server,
(For example, i met Votekick when he first started, i was 60+, we were in an empty server(cant remember which), the Passing Map one, i added him as a friend and was pretty nice to him and now he's a donor and regular player, higher level than me as well)
so give them a chance! Don't ruin the MG name by being so bad to the new players

This is what I think should be done:

    View attachment 670

A level 1 connects to the Expert Server. As marvel said, he gets a message that says he should probably connect to one of the lower servers. But if he so chooses he can continue to play on the Expert Server. However if he chooses to go - he will be redirected to one of the servers which is nearer to his level. In this case, the level 1 is directed to the Training Server.

Though when a level 50 connects to the Training Server he will be forced to go to a a server more near his level. In this case, the Advanced Server or the Expert Server.

Similarly, a level 200 guy cannot go on any of the servers below his level. He can only connect to the Expert Server.

Finally, the Fun Server allows any level player. Because, after all, it is supposed to be a fun server. A Custom Campaigns Server can be classed as a Fun Server.

    ---------------------------------

    1. Exemptions to level limits are Donors, Rich Kids and Admins. They can go on any server. This is also excellent business because more people will want to become donors (or admins lol) and then more people will buy from the store :P
    2. The Training Server has the most slots because more people will connect there. We need to keep them up so that they effectively get used to the system and want to level up and go to the Advanced Server or Expert Server.
    3. Alternatively the Training Server can have the least slots and the Expert Server have the most, but the slot number isn't important as of yet.
    4. The Fun Server should always be open to any level players.
    5. Guild Clan players will have to level up together to avoid dissolution or break down of the clan. But it will be more appropriate for them to be invited to any server if a Guild Clan leader says !invite and chooses their name from a list and that player can enter the server without level limitation. It's another reason to be in a Guild Clan.

Hopefully my babble hasn't bored you.

Some ideas for these servers would be
    Training server=
    Tank doesnt have paranioa?
Tank have half the hp (20k)
Spitters dont slow you down 75% and you can shot it.
Hp on SI are a bit lower to the current normal COOP

    Regular server=
    Tank still not paranioa
    Tank will have 40k hp
Spitters slows you down 75% however you can still shot it.
HP on SI are the same as the current Normal COOP

    Expert server=
    paranioa tank Yes
    Tanks 40k hp
Spitters slows you down 75% and Melee only?
SI hp are the same as extreme coop.

It sounds like a good idea to me, it will keep the high level players from jumping into low level games for a thrill kill and protect low levels from jumping in over their heads and whining for a teamscramble which is where we get all the guyths together and thscramble em all up... Bah I'm just ticked off because all day there has been no one on VI, I was forced to play Acid Boomer Party which is ok but I really only like VI and Berserker.

Maybe this new system will make PR more palatable for me. I am old and don't understand all this toaster and gem bullshit. Maybe the novice server could have hints pop up.

One funny thing is for the last few weeks on VI I have noticed a dramatic evening of teams. You can never tell who is gonna win. I have so many freinds now I dont know who I wanna play with. I got too many buddies now to all be on the same team. I like all the VI players. Team jumping is slowing down because it is anyones game. The guys I like to call my team are no longer invincible, we get raped all the time by nobodys. I often suspect an aimbot or two but I still love my VI.

Legend your idea takes too many servers, and we need additional servers for all locations then to accomplish it. It could be done for COOP though but I have my doubts about versus.

Anyway thanks for all the replies, the more replies I read the more I'm getting against blocking servers for low or high level players. I'll keep watching this thread :)

i think we should let all server open for everyone. when "noobs" go to a extreme server its ok for me, sure it suck sometimes that they try to revive u slow and with 30 hp but they try to help and most time they get incapped before they help me up. and playing with high lvl which try to teach the low lvl player help them a lot.
not like other ppl which votekick every noob when he do something wrong ( maybe he didnt know better ). and its better to teach them and then kick if they just dont want to understand instead of screaming at em and make em leave
most time noobs leave extreme server when they die all after 3 min. and if not then they are skilled players without PR upgrades, what make them not automatic to noobs.
not the PR upgrades give u skill, its how u play.
so all in all my thinking is let all server open for everyone. i dont like to exclude ppl becaues they are "not good enough"

I have absolutely no problem with the way it is now. When I was a very low level, I sticked mostly to the high level players and learned from them. If they weren't there, I wouldn't know which skills/upgrades/buffs are the most useful, what should I pay attention to, what are the overall mechanics of the server etc. As everybody says, it is quite annoying when a low level player is picking you up slowly and leaving you with 30hp, and a high level who is 1 foot away can't help you because the newbie is blocking. But I can always use my bounty earned on protecting and picking THEM up to buy some pillz :). Sometimes, yeah, I do get angry with them, although I never say it out loud or try votekicking poor newbies because some things may not be as clear to them as to more experienced players. Usually I politely advise low levels not to help up incapped survivors before they max out their upgrades.
When I was a low level I helped up other players only when I had to. Just used my brain and figured this out pretty quickly (oh ho ho :P).

Anyway, let's not crush newbies just because they are newbies. Everyone learns, except for really big retards, and they can always be kicked. I hate it when people shout out profanities at each other and are generally rude, just because something is wrong with their game. It should be fun for everyone, and everybody should do their best to keep it like that.

I think there should be an equal amount of high and low levels on each team in versus, and in co-op... well, we can handle them. But limiting servers to people of certain levels? The world is not split into parts for people of certain age. That's why, you can say, it's "balanced". Legend's idea was good because there was this "fun server" for everyone, but if that's impossible to do...
