So anybody willing to explain what steam workshop support really is? I'm sorry I've been trying to read it but it doesn't make any sense to me right now, probably the amount of beers I had is part of that ;)

    Thanks, LJ...

Yes, it's Clientside Downloading for things like addon maps.

The biggest benefit in my eyes is you don't have to hunt for download links or expect people to locate a .vpk file for an addon.

Instead, as long as they "subscribe," (like LJ said,) they can enjoy the content.

This could encourage some neat things for MG...

Ok but you still need to subscribe to maps, addons etc. it still doesn't auto fetch the content when you're connecting to a server that requires it.

It simply has every addon for left 4 dead 2. The maps, mods, themes and everything. It will surely help the server a lot. We can get a lot of new things to try out. :whoo:

compared to the process before players had to go through, finding the file, downloading the map, finding correct folder to put it in and this process had to be done by every player connecting to the server. With workshop this process has been extremely shorten, removing much stress from many players and server owners.

    here is an idea what could be done;

    1. make thread and sticky it, include in this thread all the custom maps server will be hosting
    2. adding vote map option to the server to help players rotate through the maps they want to play
    3. voting map option can only be used or it comes up towards the end of each campaigns last round

lets not forget hosting events now has been made easy now. We have wide range of survival maps to choice from, and we can easily rotate through them with click of button.

How about a custom MG pack that people could subscribe to? It could include 1 or two currently hosted maps that could be rotated (don't want too many, some people have quotas |:() and some MG specific stuff like textures for toasters, special tanks etc.

I'm into sound design and now I'm thinking about MG-specific sounds like toaster and vending machine spawn sounds, poison witch sounds, things like that.

I bet other people are starting to think along the same lines if there is enough interest we could start a new thread or forum area to organise our collective efforts.

Didn't CrazyRabbit make a map that we can include?

Yes, but it never got played. Legend was trying to get it on the servers, but left before he finished. Just need a root to tell me what they need to get it working for PR.

I'm uploading other stuff at the moment, here's my workshop page. http://steamcommunity.com/id/CrazyRabbitL4D/myworkshopfiles/

creating our own MG package people can subscribe to is actually even better idea. I hope marval reads over this thread, we need his feedback on the matter.

I've made custom Survivor MG skins. I also made a MG toaster skin so a collection wouldn't be such a bad idea. As soon as you subscribe to a collection, all the mods download. Although, most of these smaller items can be packaged into 1 mod and you can make them private on the Workshop also, so only those with the link can download them.

    WARNING!

If you have mods/maps in your old addons folder, you need to remove them in order to play with others that have workshop items. We tested my workshop map and discovered that only people using Workshop mods could join my local server.

Anyone with mods in their addons folder was crashing. This could be isolated, but I have seen a lot of discussions on the Community Hub regarding mods/maps not working.

From now on, you need to decide where you get your mods/maps from because they won't be compatible from two different sources.

Workshop mods/maps will update when the author releases a new version.

l4dmaps based mods/maps won't and you need to manually install them. They are not compatible with Workshop mods/maps even if they're the same version.

ALL of this only applies to playing on a locally hosted server, we haven't checked it on a dedicated server. So, if we do a MG collection of mods/maps, we have to make sure everyone has the same thing and nothing in their old addons folder.

This is what happens when I'm left out of the Workshop Beta.

I had to delete all my custom gun skins from the addon folder. After the workshop came out the skins just changed to something completely different and yet I never updated them or subscribed to anything on the workshop.

The only problem with the workshop is that it brang a lot of instability to the servers, specially on versus mode (Even vanilla servers are having issues) but I'm sure that will be fixed soon (I hope so).

Anyway, the workshop update didn't give game servers any tool or system to force a player to download a workshop mod or anything like that. We can't simply add new addons if we cannot ensure consistency on all servers, specially on new players.

If we had custom toaster, survivor or sounds, new players would see ERROR models around and they would rage quit because of this and never come back.

My only concern are the newcomers, besides that, a single addon sounds good (:

I wonder if it is possible for a steam group to add new addons.

You have a "Contributors" option.. but it's not associated with a Steam Group. It just means several authors have access to the mod page for updates etc.
