screenshot, people just leaving the saferoom at the start of the chapter, i have literally done nothing and says my rep has gone down, this also happened at the start of the bridge chapter where we were waiting for everyone to leave the saferoom to get the bridge to come down and again, no team attacking no rushing no witches nothing, yet peoples, including my own, rep had dropped.

Rep is the worst update so far, I've stopped playing coop completely because you can't shoot without hitting someone when you are going as a group, can't throw molotovs without someone going in it, when trying to save someone from an SI you shoot it and hit the person that is next to them helping them tbh should be removed completely, ruins all the fun of coop when you have to be careful all the time and not having any "fun".

yeah, I have been trying to do what was suggested to raise rep the most, but mine just goes down.

Personally I've never had a problem with maintaining Team's Pillar/Angel. I've drifted between the two occasionally but iirc I'm still on Team's Angel. In general, I don't use many mollies, and I don't set of fires in the way of where the team has to go.

There's also a buff which increases the rate at which your rep rises, and decreases the level at which it drops. Makes things easier, although I don't have it.

Of course rushing and shooting witches won't be helping your cause Ping...

I'm sure there's a perfectly valid reason for that arrow going down in the screenshot. Let me say, though, that you guys (gamers) RELY WAY, WAY, WAY TOO MUCH ON THOSE ARROWS! Simply take major warning from a DOUBLE arrow going down, which means a DRASTIC change in 1 map.

A down arrow means the last (EVEN IF ONLY MINUTE) tiny action committed by your character worked against your rep. It does not mean you are losing an entire title. That would be two down arrows. How often do you see two down arrows? Almost never... which means, logically, YOU REALLY HAVE TO TRY to lose that much rep if you are going to.

I don't know, maybe you have accidentally swung your melee once while typing !laseron or perhaps you popped off 1 single round as you were loading and your controls first became available? These are just speculation.

However, WITHOUT INVALIDATING your situation, I wanted to mention... I personally looked up your actual reputation in the database. I noticed that it has come a LONG way from "team destroyer" (or demon?, wherever it was a few weeks ago.) We don't provide actual rep figures, cuz then everyone will be asking us to to look it up. However you are a fair amount above baseline now. Your efforts ARE PAYING OFF.

Note: Gamers, please do NOT just message me or another admin and request that we look up your rep. We will not tell you the figure, and we do not have the time to do this on an on-demand basis.

Refer to my blog (or HC's actual post) about how !rep is calculated, with "0" being average or baseline.

I am no stranger to the harsh repercussions of ACCIDENTS working against your rep. Many times, I'd finish the day 1 step below great rep. It would piss me off, but I figured out my own strategy on how to fix it. Ask me, and I'll tell you each & every one of my tricks.

We take ALL COMPLAINTS seriously, including those which claim error or bug in the PR system or mod. However, there are absolutely no bugs in the reputation system.

A Few Myths, A Few Facts About Reputation

MYTH: "My rep will drop an entire title by scaring a witch that kills a bunch of surv's in 1 map."
FACT: Your rep, if you're close to another title already, could change titles in 1 map if I do a DRASTIC move against the team per the rep system.
FACT: If you do a lot of damage to the team per !rep, then you can use the next 1.5-2 maps (OPTIMUM PLAYING RESULTS) to get the rep back up. (TO COMPENSATE THAT 1 BAD MOVE)

MYTH: "My rep will never go up, no matter what I do. I can't buy things now."
FACT: If you carry a defibrillator with me, stay in the middle of the team, and fight for every last pickup & defib I can, your rep will go up... but it won't and can't be done in 1 campaign or even a day, at least not easily.
FACT: If you LOOK for and WAIT for major major pickup opportunities (Crash Course finale, when the immune tank gets in the fan,) like Drainer Tanks, Knight Tanks, poisoned people, poisoned people WITH NO PILLS, weak players who are about to go down... and keep picking them up rapidly... you can RAISE your !rep as fast as it fell.

Remember, as in HC's post (which I copied to my Blog, here on the forums,) Reputation is scored from:

    + 5.000 Team's Angel
    0.000 Average (Baseline)
    - 5.000 Team's Demon

I can say, that after looking your Reputation up in the database, you are not far from being back up to Average. Whatever you are doing, you are doing right.

The values can change as much as -.02, for example, and as little as -.001, (another example.)

We simply rate each thing when explaining Reputation as: Major/Significant Increase, Major/Significant Decrease, Minor Increase, Minor Decrease.

    Quick Examples:
    - Kill Teammate - Significant Decrease in Reputation
    - Free Teammate (Smoker/Hunter) - Minor Increase in Reputation
    - Heal Teammate With Med Kit - NO CHANGE IN REPUTATION
    - Protect Teammate (Shoot zombies around them) - Minor Increase in Reputation

Using the High Rep Buff and it indeed helps. My rep has gone from Bad to Team's pillar in just few games. I think its worth it for people who are worried about their reps. Maybe some clans might like team destroyers :)

If you are wondering why my rep was Bad in the first place I restarted playing after many months and was unaware of the rep system. Startling witches got me a Bad rep :)

I think I've read everything there is to read about rep, and I have some questions. Currently I'm a Team D(umbass)emon, and I'm trying desperately hard to correct it. I know that reviving and defibbing is the best way to do so, but I can't help but be paranoid that by not knowing EXACTLY what I did/ am doing to trash my rep, I will only be taking one step forward, two steps back day in and day out. I'm taking this very seriously, as it's frustrating to be sitting on 70+ bounty when a shaman is wrecking the team. I hate being worthless in those situations.

-Startled witch incapacitates a teammate. (Major decrease)
-Started witch kills a teammate. (Major decrease)

    • Is there a range on this? If an afker startles a witch and the rest of the team is miles away, do we all pay the price for that?
    • Being below 100, I am terrified to help kill a freshly startled poisoned witch, especially if I know I'm going to get poisoned and I do not have pills. Do I lose rep for choosing not to shoot her and get aggro? Do I lose rep for trying to kill the witch, only to perish by her hands because someone thought it was funny to startle her?
    • Or do these rules only apply to the person that startled the witch, and not the team as a whole?

    -Rushing. (Minor decrease)
    • This is actually what I suspect dropped my reputation down to Team Dumbass. I desperately need some clarification on this. 99.9% of the games I've played usually have one major group moving forward, and a smaller group in the way back of no more than 4 people usually. Does the major group lose rep because of the stragglers? Is the major group considered to be rushing? When specifically are you not rushing and when are you rushing?
    • What about staying in the saferoom while people are farming? Who is losing rep then?

If any of my questions have previously been answered, I'm sorry, still new to the forums and the mod in general.

Rosie and other "Team Demons"/"Team Destroyers" that don't want to be anymore... SAVE UP FOR, AND MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE THE High Reputation Buff AS SOON AS YOU'RE ABLE. I believe the level requirement is 110, but don't remember for sure.

    Witches:

    - If you startle a witch, and it kills 1 person, it's a decrease in rep. The more that die or are injured, the bigger the decrease to your rep.

    - If the witch is startled already, fighting it shouldn't mess with your rep. Once it starts incapping and killing people, yeah, it has to die somehow. "How" is up to the team. Sometimes I'll personally try to gain some distance (on harder maps or more SI-populated maps) before the next one pops up.

    - There are several effective ways to kill the witch. They have 2,500 HP, but it needs to be taken down fast to obviously avoid others dying or being incapped. Melee, Spas (Combat) Shotgun & Auto Shotgun seem to work the best. Saving some explosive rounds for it help a LOT, as they stumble it. Many choose to use an AWP Sniper to kill the witches regularly; this isn't a great idea, because the more that they are screwed with, the more likely a "death witch" will be.

    - Damage dealt by fire / molotov / gas can is deducted from the person's rep who started / ignited it. Just because a situation like a "gas can finale" is taking place, and it doesn't say "So & So Incapacitated So & So," that does NOT mean that they didn't get it deducted from their rep. It does. Just like with the witches, if you incap 1, it's much less of a deduction than it is if you throw a molotov and it incaps 5. I know how it feels... "Why are they running into the fire???" I sometimes think & have even said the same thing. However, with some cases, like a death witch, it can be a desperate last move. In other cases, like with a certain tank type, it is essential.

    - Anyone below AVERAGE rep shouldn't be messing with molotovs or gas cans at all, as they're an incredibly easy way to give up your rep. Simply carry a bile jar or nothing at all. If you hear a witch, let someone else startle it, or at least try to figure out where it is if you've got enough room to look around. That small trick alone keeps me from startling every single one I find.

    - DO NOT BLOW UP CARS; this is a cheap way to rack-up commons-killed, and if it kills another team mate, is a significant deduction off of your rep.

    - I don't think you, specifically, need to worry about rushing. This can be remedied by the next map. Rushing is typically (if memory serves, at least,) determined by X gamer being ahead of the team by X completion score points. I'd say at about 20 completion score points-worth distance, you're rushing and won't be able to: pick up quest items, pick up prizes, or buy anything for the remainder of the round. Again, it's an easy remedy, just hover around the poisoned folks or fight for the window to defib someone to un-do whatever penalty comes from it.

Unless you're fire-bombing the entire team, igniting the Safe Room with people in it, or running around shooting your team mates on purpose, NO one particular action will just make your rep drop an entire rank or title in one round. Censor paying too much attention to the arrows; they're just an indicator or overall trend as to where your rep is going RIGHT NOW. If you start seeing a pair of double arrows down, THEN YOU CAN start wondering... and re-evaluate what you're doing entirely.

Farming is subjective and can't be determined or evaluated by the rep system. It's also a very specific, HIGHLY BANNABLE thing... The reputation system is simple addition and subtraction. There is no "brain" to it that detects "Hey, this guy is holding up the campaign," or "This gal is points-harvesting and keeping things from moving along." Those are situations you must feel absolutely free, welcome, and entitled to summon an admin about. RECORD A DEMO video; screenshots don't prove much. However, anyone who submits good footage of farming will have their name kept private; it's not your fight. It's ours (my Team's and mine,) and we're happy to put a stop to it. Chances are, we know who they are already and just need good evidence to ban them over it with. AGAIN, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COME GET ME, ANOHTER MEMBER OF MY TEAM, OR RECORD A DEMO AND SUBMIT IT THROUGH SOURCEBANS; WE WILL DO THE REST AND MAKE SURE IT IS STOPPED. Farming is serious shit cuz it makes people leave over 1 or 2 douche bags' greedy behavior.

Note: There are tutorials on the forum about how to record a demo. You just need the console open, then to type a command, and *REMEMBER* that, when you exit L4D2, to locate your demo (and where they are stored by default.)

Sorry for the lengthy post, had a lot of points to cover here.

This started out with a title like "rep system must be bugged." Since so many good questions are being asked here, I renamed it to Discussion About...

Talk about a beacon of hope. I'm glad this thread pointed this buff out to me. Hopefully I'll at least be a Team Destroyer when I'm around 110, will definitely be purchasing this buff.

Whoa! I did not know this! I don't recall ever being locked out of !buy before I was Team Destroyer, so I can safely assume that rushing is not what is trashing my rep. Thank you very much for this info, it's an easy way to check if you're rushing!

I admit, I have been obsessively checking my /rep in an attempt to figure out what is good and what I should avoid. This has only raised more questions lol. I think you or Rabbit might of been around when it happened, but a few days back someone threw a molly outside of the saferoom. It incapped me because I was distracted. I checked my rep, and saw a down arrow. I jokingly brought up "How dare you take fire damage Franklin, I will punish you by reducing your rep". In reality though, wtf? It pissed me off because that's a step in the wrong direction and I did nothing wrong.

Since I've never seen the double arrows, haven't blown up a car in months (especially not with people around it. this was before i even knew what rep was!), nor have I ever set my team on fire, I can only assume that enough minor mistakes had finally added up and got me to Team Demon.

I'm a bit confused about your complaint. You can still play on the servers, even if you're the nastiest of the nasty demons. Just can't buy things or upgrade anything. Basically all you have to do is fixate on helping people up / defibbing them. Like that should be your main goal when you play, try to help people up as often as possible, and defibs should be your new Aztec gold.

I definitely don't like the reputation system.. it seems way to easy to decrease your rep, but then again it's not incredibly annoying.

I did that gas can in the saferoom (I had thought they don't ignite when you throw it,but this time it did), and my rep went from bad to team destroyer heh funny funny.

I pretty much gave up trying to increase rep and using the !buy store. I figured I'd just wait till 110 to get the High Rep BUFF and then raise it from there. Just adjust your gameplay a bit more, MGFTW servers are meant to play CO-OP like, if you're rushing, shooting people, throwing molotovs carelessly you will be punished. Since my last complaint about the rep system I found myself playing differently and I noticed I even went up to terrible from TEAM destroyer without even trying or the high rep buff.

Adjust your gameplay and don't be so careless, and you'll get the hang of it.

I'm not in the mindset where I would want the REP system completely taken out anymore. But I would agree turning the rep system off for players below level 10. Alot of them won't understand the game-style yet and would probably end up not being able to use the !buy system very quickly. For players that make it to the HIGH REP BUFF, reputation doesn't become much of a problem anymore!

And some stats from HonorCode :
-20 revives are required to pass from Team Destroyer to Terrible
-70 revives are required to pass from Terrible to Bad
-60 revives are required to pass from Bad to Average
-100 revives are required to pass from Average to Good
-70 revives are required to pass from Good to Excellent
-20 revives are required to pass from Excellent to Team's Pillar

You see... I agree, but I don't agree. I feel a huge part of the rep system is to discourage trolling. Most trolls will be bellow level 10.

However, I'm starting to see new guys with already really bad rep. I myself didn't even fully understand rep until I suddenly couldn't buy things anymore. The arrows reminded me of reddit's vote system, and I just laughed and thought everyone thought I sucked and was "downvoting" me for dying all the time or something. Decided to ignore it and just play. Didn't learn what it really was until it was too late.
