custom map server

I'm quite a fan of custom maps and there's a few good ones out there (night terror, detour ahead, death aboard).
so maybe you could have a server with just custom maps and have them all as one big download from this site.

 

We've tried this before. Many times.

The problem always seems to be that people don't download the maps.
Ofcourse people will, but the server will be mostly empty where all the others are 20/20

Alas, it's not my call if we start a custom map server - but IMO, it's not worth it.

 

is it possible to be downloading a custom map whilst playing one of the normal ones? In UT3, if you didn't have the next map, it would automatically start downloading - the trouble with this is that by the time it had completed the download, everyone else would have finished the map and be on to the next one but if it could be downloading using spare bandwidth during gameplay, then it would be all ready for when it's needed and you could splice a few custom maps inbetween the others.

 

If this was possible, don't you think it would have been done by now? Actually don't reply to that - reply to this: Do you think it would be possible to download maps while playing on such a heavy resourced game?

 

I've no idea how heavy resourced this or any other game is.

An alternative would be to do what steam does with their steam-cloud where people just install some kind of syncronizing downloader that will update their custom games directory automatically with whatever maps you have on your servers.

 

I thought custom maps died with superbunny. I was wrong.

If I had control of that server I'd literally maxxxx it out!!!!

 

I would really love to see a custom map server! If you created a MG map pack that was one simple download then I think most people would get it. If it was an extreme coop server with chances for shamans and knights people would go there or even a custom survival server would be really great.

we don't need 24/7 custom server, what we need is a custom server only on weekends. we had helms deep weekend, but this time we rotate throughout other type of survival maps. All maps can be chosen beforehand, this means by the time weekend starts we all should know which map to download.

This sort of thing can work differently, depending how the staff wants to tackle it. We either have staff pick custom map, or we have a vote on it on the forums. personally, it doesn't matter to me.

once we have our maps, we can rotate them every weekend. And after certain amount of time, they will become official maps of MG, everyone will have them.
