... You guys have great ideas for new things to add, but one point I made in my original post: CAN WE FIX THE CURRENT ISSUES (guild buffs not working for example) BEFORE WE ADD NEW THINGS? lol

We should also consider and be prepared for the worst. What if L4D2 is simply dying? It's not just our servers that are getting empty. It's global in size. However, as of right now, there are a lot of people on, so I cannot really use any mathematics to predict any outcome. Marv, you have any statistical data?

I say we should bring back custom maps / survival for events more often! I say we should have guild wars asap! I say we should fix the guild buffs like TJ said! Also, I am coming up with a pretty good idea so MABY more people will play extreme co-op. Many of you guys said extreme co-op is empty and I think it might be too hard and people are too lazy to have teamwork. So yeah, I might come up with a suggestion maby. :D

We can do this and that about rewards, maps or whatever. The main issue right now is to get new players to join the server and stay there, and I don't see it coming. When HD servers was up, many lvl 1 players joined and the first thing people said in chat was "Oh no, lvl 1 lololololol". Imagine instead, the experience for a new player to join and be treated well and actually hear people talk in mic, have good teamplay, experience bad ass tanks, and more of it and not be laughed at for being a new player.

This could be seen in VS too, when a new player joins and of course he will eventually get tank, people writing: AFK! go AFK player! You're noob, go AFK!!!" and when he doesn't he get votekicked for no reason really. Every guy you do that to will never join these servers again. Try instead to explain for them how the system works, and that it's actually a point system where you level up and so on.

Never forget that you were once a lvl 1 player as well.

What avilroad said and + you can't really explain anything to them, you have to be on the move constantly, or you are going to get vote-kicked yourself. But for tanks on VS (i rarely play on VS, but still) i usually ask them nicely 2-3 times but they don't listen.

Maybe it's time to change the server's location to somewhere it has potential of being full then.

I think we should make a poll here, on this forum, and see where people live.

No, all I can tell is that some months are more busy than others, so it's not like it gets more quiet all the time as time passes by. There are peaks and drops. The worst month was probably when MW3 and BF3 came out. I also didn't notice a lot of difference since we went steam only. Last weeks were actually quite good.

And you know, to be really honest I don't care so much. If it gets more quiet I'll close servers, if it gets more crowded I'll re-open them. It's really not a big deal. We all do this for fun so I'm not gonna worry about it. I think with the busy private life we all have we do a great job with that little bit of free time we have to work on MG. I mean it's easy when you have only 1 server like gcftw.com or Zomb!e Islands but we'have like 16 servers spread out over the world with a complex infrastructure between them.

Btw I know we closed Sao Paulo but lack of players wasn't the only cause. The line was bad, the server was way too expensive, it had power outages multiple times a week and a host provider that used Google Translate to give me support in English. So that server was just bad news all the way.

I'm sure others have mentioned or asked, and perhaps this isn't the thread to do it in, but why not (?)

I'm one of several gamers on MG who are in computers professionally and seasoned in regards to development and familiar with innards of Steam.

I'd happily fulfill a volunteer developer position if there is one. I'm not after any sort of in-game bonuses, this is just something I have the time for (and, truth be told,) don't want to see any possibility of MG / L4D2 leaving. :-/

Resume, Certifications, Retail Merchant's Certificate, etc., available upon request. Or, find me in the (now defunct -> ) Social network of Microsoft.com, or Technet, MSDN and in the MSMVP blogs. (weblog) I also contribute to sevenforums.com/vistax64.com, Malwarebyte's Forums, and have since stopped doing Volunteer Site Moderation for the games we play. (Support Portal, I have a bunch of professional replies about the client, etc. Just good work (demonstrated.) Thanks for reading.

:bump: .. prepare for a cool story lol (skip to the list if you don't feel like reading this first paragraph)

I'm reviving this thread again because it's been about 8 months since I first wrote this, and I was thinking about it earlier and I still feel the same way: MG Servers Need A Revival! I thought that things would pick up during the summer but as we can see, there hasn't been much change. I know, I know, Day Z is really popular so some people left for that. And of course steams summer sale. And I also know that the DDOS attacks and the laggy servers have really screwed things up a lot. I'm glad that you (Marvel) have at least been handling it and thanks again on the new server you bought. But even still, I think things could get better. You said that you weren't worried about it, and I understand your view. But I'm worried about it and I know others are too. You know how much I've donated to this place so you know it matters a lot to me because I've put money in to see this place grow. Anyway I think this isn't really a call to action on your part but more on the other admins parts (especially the modders). Looking throughout this thread and even other threads on the forum, there are a lot of ideas that I really think can help get things back to where they used to be. Sure it probably will never be like last summer when I had to wait 10 min for a server, but I'm sure we can at least make things fun again so they aren't so repetitive and boring. I went through this thread and saw some ideas that people had that got a lot of likes and even some that are JUST NOW being considered. I think work should be put in to really focus on implementing some of these ideas:

    1. Custom Coop/VS server: a lot of people really liked this idea. I dont think it should necessarily be a seperate server.. but how about we add these custom maps to our current coop and vs servers. We can make a thread/sticky on the announcements page or something and devote it specifically to listing all the custom maps that MG is currently using so people always know where to find them. I see that some people have talked about it recently, but this idea was mentioned by Chocobo 8 months ago, so if its already in the works, then that's awesome.

    2. Survival mode VS: this was also mentioned recently regarding HD server. Well it just so happens Von Bock mentioned this 8 months ago as well. I hope we are really going through with this because survival vs would be awesome and definitely a fresh change. Many of our vs rounds end up becoming a "survival" mode and if we had a server just for that, it would be great. Long rounds I'm sure, but at least we'd have a full server.

    3. Normal HD server: I think this speaks for itself. I know we've tried it on and off and it doesnt always remain full. But how about we just do this on weekends like we started. And how about we remain diligent in keeping it that way. I understand it may not remain full every day of the week but if people know its a weekend thing, then I'm sure it will be full for the weekends.

    4. Newcomers: Von Bock also mentioned how we need to do more to attract newcomers and keep newcomers. We have to do better about keeping our newcomers happy and not scaring them off by ranting on about their low levels. Smokke is gone now, and while he was a good friend, we don't need another one. This isn't to our admins, but to us as players. Cut the crap about low levels. We were all level 1 at one point too. And we all used to play regular l4d as well. If you have old friends that still play regular l4d, then invite them to MG to test it out. While we still have empty servers, maybe take them to an empty server to walk them through MG and give them a feel for things.

    5. Admin-Abuse: This wasn't mentioned in this thread but I've seen many complaints about it in the past few months and it's really disturbing me. What the hell? If there are admins abusing their powers, please record/screenshot it, send it to Marv or a root. Stop with the pointing fingers unless you have proof. And if there is proof, then can we do something about it and get these admins out of their positions? I understand that a lot of people may not have the opportunity to record/SS it when it happens. But if enough people complain about the same person, then I at least think work should be done to investigate it and handle the matter. For months, people complained about king and smokke and said they should be permabanned. In the end (many months later unfortunately), what happened?

Idk what else to put, but yea.. add stuff if you have ideas, but i really think these 5 I listed here deserve top priority because a lot of people have given/liked/agreed with these ideas
