Creating our own game?

Was having a discussion with Luke about creating our own zombie survival game and talking about the idea was fun so I decided to make a thread to discuss this further and in order to exchange some idea's how your perfect zombie survival game would look like :)

This discussion started because of the shortcomings DayZ has:

    • DayZ is limited to Windows which makes it highly unstable.
    • DayZ is too restricted, i.e. it can't be modded by us or anyone else.
    • DayZ is too buggy and has many infrastructural problems as well.
    • DayZ doesn't allow private servers.

So, what we could do is make our own game:

    • Built on CryEngine3, full support for Linux servers and multicore.
    • Create a central hive to which every dedicated server can connect, but allow private hyves as well.
    • Create our own huge map, instead of Russia we could do something different, something huge like the entire city of New York, or something more open like countryside villages in Italy, anything is possible here.
    • Set a goal. Scavange, kill zombies and survive but allow for settlement as well. Occupy a city or village, maybe even create a market so players can sell/trade items to other players/clans (gun stores, food markets, horse ranches etc).
    • Extended stats / awards / incentive system.

    etc. etc. etc.

Right now this is just an idea, maybe even a fantasy but we do have the people and infrastructure to do this and I just think we can do a way better job than what DayZ does right now, if really good thought out.

    What do you think? :)

Let's say, if this becomes Zombie MMORPG or something, feel pick some of these ideas and feel free to edit/change them lol

    - Vehicles/Horses for movement.
    - Professions/skills that player learns over time, and so the player is able to promote his own importance to other groups he meets..
Such Skills/Professions could be: (Medic, First aid, Herblore (for healing, when theres only herbs available), Fishing/Hunting/Cooking, Constructors (More about these later) fortress guard/security (more about these later), Stablemaster (for horse breeding/traning),
    - being able to build fortress and other buildings into certain areas (constructors).

    - If the fortress or whatever is big enough and stands out enough at night, (lights, big noice, ect) There will be waves of zombies trying to break in and eat everyone untill the dawn comes or untill everyone is eaten. This will occur every night and (sometimes also daily), as the zombies "are able" to "remember" the area. this would be good to prevent abusive spots and to make players actually think of "silence" and "safe camping". Obviously these fortresses can be destroyed or "taken over" and looted/destroyed by enemies (who can even be just normal traders who decides to fuck around later), therefore security is needed. these fortresses DOES NOT have the control flag like at pvp area.

Fortresses could be player/guild owned trading areas, where u would still need security in case of Thiefs, and lockpickers, or hostile guilds or players who tries to take over. Players could apply to security role for public guild/player owned places via forums or via in game.

    - Large PVP/supplies gathering area for guilds, this area is full of supplies and is divided to big parts for each guild to take over their own.. Basically it's like controling flags, Let's say, it's a big area that has 12 fortresses, and supplies around the place, each fortress has flag, and once a guild member goes and captures that flag, the default flag will change to a flag of that guild until someone else captures it. Obviously u can pvp anywhere, but this would be for "guild wars". And to prevent one guild taking over every posts, each post will reset at the same time after 24-48 hours (back to grey, when guilds needs to capture these again).

Animals: Players could be able to tame animals in order to guard their own fortress when they are away. These animals would be hard to kill based on their types.. Types could be: Bears, Wolves, Stray Dogs after the apocalypse, or anything else.

    Enviorment rules:

    Forest / Sewers:
    Less supplies
Less chance of finding a working or "broken" car or heli (which can be repaired).
    Less Zombies
    Less players

    villages/roads/farms/open areas
    Moderate ammount of supplies
Moderate chance of finding a working or broken vehicle
    Moderate ammount of zombies
Moderate ammount of players that can be nearby

    City (For a group only)
    alot of supplies
Alot of vehicles (working & broken)
    Alot of zombies
    Alot of players

Thats all for now, as i lost my original message which was twice as big..

Because of CryEngine's engine similarity to Source, we already made the starting training island :) We still need to put trees and such, but we're getting there. The team I have assembled is compromised of me (programmer), my friend Wallfz (amazing mapper), and my real life friend GS (custom composed music). I am still looking for a modeler, but I'll ask around my university and see if I can get one.

Anyone played Far Cry 3? The graphics in that game were powered by CryEngine:

In fact, all of the Far Cry and Crysis games were powered by CryEngine. :) The engine has a crappy multiplayer SDK, so I'll need to completely rewrite that portion of the engine so it can handle hundreds of players without significant lag.

Here is a list of ideas:

I'm pissed at the DayZ devs. I suggested adding a modding platform to their game as it would have a high chance of becoming standalone in the future. For example, all HL2 mods like Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2 were just that-- mods of HL2. They turned into standalone games later in development much like DayZ probably will. The only difference is, they promoted modding, and hence have long outlived their games' lives. Modding is essential to any game since the freshness would never end long after its release. Those people are to stupid to understand, and all they could do was mock my suggestion.

Dare mock me, I say? I just compiled the unmodified CryEngine code and ran the executable. Behold the power of CryEngine 3 in a zombie apocalypse :P Obviously, the HUD and everything is completely going to change, along with a character design system and such.

You're about to get sunk, DayZ.

Note I'm running this on a laptop with decent FPS.

Dayz will run standalone soon. and they are working on a modding platform :)

I guess that makes me a fearful competitor. This project can really help pay off my college fees. I am hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt right now.

Added in the ability to toggle third person view with the key T. Now to just figure out a good way to make it user-configurable in the key selection UI.

The engine's current Crysis UI will obviously be changed later. Now, while I work on adding the basic core features, we need ideas. We know this game is going to be a zombie survival MMO. I am rewriting the entire network portion of the engine to use the high-density client-server latency algorithm so that the player limit can be increased to 200 per server.

The game itself will reside on a giant (possibly fictional) continent around 6000 sq. miles and surrounded by ocean on all sides. There will be numerous cities with NPCs, ability to trade, and whatnot. Now, the game itself-- what should we do? This is now a community project, so pitch in whatever you can to help. Ideas mainly, since the dev group I assembled have everything else covered.

The dev team for this project:
    - Me (programming/developer/producer)
    - Wafflz (environment mapping)
    - GS (music and sounds)
    - possibly Omega-Epsilon (Lua scripting to test out the modding platform)

    Who I still need:
    - Good modeler (essential!)
    - Photoshop/image creator
    - Adobe After Effects or something similar expert (not required, but helpful)
    - Networking specialist (marvel? :D)

And of course, the community admins to lend ideas.

Wow where the hell did this come from lol, seems like this just sprung from the ground, incredible really. Might be a stupid question but humor me im just curious, is this going to be like a stand alone game or what? are you planning on putting a price tag on it?

As for the photoshop/image creator, i can be that guy, what are you talking about though besides the obvious advertisement? or is that all you need? Also why do you need an after effects expert? im no expert but i know my way around it pretty well.

Not at all... I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it, too. Yeah, it is to be the game that puts DayZ to shame, and yeah, it's his baby/big project for an actual game! Pretty exciting stuff to be privvy to at the ground level.

Curious myself, David, what's the scope of ur knowledge w/ the Adobe CS Suite? Do you have the Master Collection or something?

I simply am not a "video"/"photo"/"graphics"-editing sort of guy. I can be creative, sure, but the Adobe Suite is a lot to just bust into.

This post explains how it started:
    http://mgftw.com/showthread.php/7149-Creating-our-own-game?p=67871#post67871

It will be a standalone game with a price tag on it, with possible releases to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 as well (since this is the CryEngine we're talking about, not Source Engine).

I will program everything and Wafflz will map everything. There are just some stuff here and there, such as designing a logo for our game studio (which we decided to call ION Game Studio, named after an electrically charged plasmatic particle), creating the 2D image for the possible UI, creating a logo for the title screen background, and stuff like that :) After Effects is only needed for the starting logos (currently it just shows a static image, but it would be nice to see the MG logo fade in and out along with our game studio animation fading in and out).

Stefeman was talking about taming animals, this sounds fun, there is no limit. Skunks could spray you and draw millions of flies, Komodo dragon can bite causing infection, porcipine is a nasty surprise, kittens attack in alarming numbers mew mew, seagulls pick out eyeballs, pigs have slippery poop, opossums play dead til surprised then get mean, giant scorpions, jumping spiders, trap door spiders, monkeys throw poop, dogs hump legs, bulls gore, giant chameleon sticky tounge, happy Great Dane knocks gun out of hand with his tail,
Bigfoot lurks and will sodomize, and Rats!!! weet weet weet squeeeee !!! Thats not a bottle of pills but a mouthfull of maggots, blah! Fall into the water, piranah and sharks pick your bones clean. Chupacabras are a nasty breed much like the Jockey. Lets not forget The Naked Mole Rat, harmless but ugly enough to kill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5DcOEzW1wA

I see, im able to do all of that lol including the after effects transitions with the logos, is this actually set in stone then or is it just an idea thats started being set into motion and could go either way? The reason i ask is obviously id take the time to do something like this properly and wouldnt want to put the time in only to have it flop lol.

    @erik

Ive been using photoshop for the past 7 or 8 years since i was like 15 lol, the majority of it was all self taught, i know it can be a little overwhelming at first but over time it just gets easy, After Effects on the other hand is a whole different ball game....that shit is a lot harder to get into from the beginning lol...its easy to string a few clips together with basic transitions and render a video like sony vegas but when you start getting into the real stuff after effects is capable of like complex video FX.....damn thats hard lol theres a lot of formula and equations involved and i suck at maths unfortunately haha, but again the more you use it the easier it gets.

I dont really use anything else from the adobe suit besides illustrator occasionally, if your looking to get into it, all you really need is creativity....the rest will follow ;)
