Years ago, I custom built a computer hoping it would last 6 years. It lasted 7.5. However, that is irrelevant because I'm no longer a person of means and am quite literally very poor. Most of the issues I have with PC performance are video-related. I am NOT current on anything hardware-related and, conversely, even though I work with computers, my only working knowledge is confined to software, Windows OS-related issues, computer setup, AV/AS issues, CMOS/BIOS, etc.

    - Browsers crash when using Twitch.TV, and Youtube.com
    - Video games frequently become pixelated, suggesting a driver update needed
    - Can not upgrade driver without critical errors. Stuck on 296.10 or something like that
    - Video games are unplayable without low shader/effect/detail settings.
    - Games like GTA-IV and PAYDAY 2 are nearly unplayable

    My Specs:
    - NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT - 512MB RAM
    - ASUS P5Q Premium motherboard
    - 8 GB DDR2 RAM
    - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz (first gen quad core,) "Rev 0 Stepping Model"
    - 2 x 1TB Western Digital Caviar HDD (WD10EADS/WD10EARS)
    - Power: Antec (model ATX12V v2.2) P/N EA-650
    - Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I can upload an EVEREST/AIDA64 Dx report if need be.

I don't have the money for a new computer. Instead, I am asking for help finding the most aggressive / fast / strong video card possible. I want to be able to play new-generation games on this computer. I want L4D2 / PAYDAY / GTA-IV to be able to run nicely and fast on this computer. I also want to be able to buy new games (L4D3) with this computer, assuming I can upgrade!

CrazyRabbit gave me a Newegg.com link a wihle ago but I lost it.

    Constructive advice only, please,

Several options in terms of the most beastly cards you can get for your buck, but what kinda budget for a card are you going for?

im thinking a gtx 660 or a radeon 6950 for your monies worth. plenty on ebay ranging from about 50 to 150 dollars. I even recently picked up a radeon 5870 for about 60 dollars for litecoin mining. about half the calculating power than the 6950, but it can handle all the directx 11 stuff fine

GTX 780 or Radeon 290X would be waste of money for that system, as the CPU would be the next bottleneck.

I would go for AMD radeon HD 77xx or higher in this case. I would also consider buying used CPU from ebay. you could get pretty much anything up to Q9705 as long as your motherboard, PSU and memory supports it.

Biggest issue however, is your GPU which could be considered ancient already. The packet computer from 2009 i bought had 9600 GT which was already old at then. I then proceeded to upgrade it into Radeon HD 5750 Formula (Which also sucks compared to today's models).

Aye, I run a 7870 at the moment and it purrs like kitty on the games erik mentioned. In terms of price/performance the 7870/50 are good options, though I'm not sure about the equivalent nvidia options atm.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP SO FAR!

I am looking at these options and many of them are way, way too expensive.

Unfortunately, I must figure out something soon, as my PC is close to completely dying. I obviously can't be without a computer or else I will lose my job.

Tough situation, but I am doing my best. Please continue to offer advice and tips, I consider it a personal favor.

    Thanks again,

If you are short on funds, something like the 560ti wouldn't be a bad choice; they have crashed in price recently and although you might not get all new games running at full settings, it can handle pretty much any game at medium settings with a good frame rate. (It should be able to handle Payday 2/L4D2 on full at 1080 like a charm)

You mentioned GTA IV though; it and a few other games are very CPU intensive (and generally terribly optimised). Your current CPU might be able to handle it if you tweak the settings though. Since getting a newer CPU would probably also mean getting a new motherboard, overclocking might be something else to look into (with sufficient cooling).

Yes, I can't afford the best, or even close to it. At BEST, possibly $100 per component. That's if I save up for a couple months in a row and predicated on this computer not dying before then, which it probably will.

I had a ati 7000 series cant remember which model but one of the lower/middle end ones and even that played most stuff on high settings with good frame rates the only game i had to lower the settings for was metro 2033, this was going back a year or 2 ago though but it still did the job and must be pretty cheap now....the only reason i changed cards was because someone gave me a top end 6900 series as repayment for a favour i did him

like stefe said...theres no point in getting a top end card when your cpu is heavily bottlenecking it, if i was you id get an i7 (not sure how much they are now but my 920's like 4 years old so cant be that much id imagine) and a radeon 7000 series (check tomshardware.com to get the benchmarks for demanding games so you can get the best card for your money) anything lower and you wont really be able to play the latest gen games with decent-high settings so personally id consider it a waste, l4d2 and payday would be fine at high but newer games like l4d3 you might struggle with

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=gtx+660&_sacat=175673
I read your pc settnigs is ok man, after next time have money maybe upgarde RAM to 16gb and u cool.
You said your pc dying, can u be more specific, maybe i can hlp u, maybe is only cp cooler old, or some fan fucked up, so if its is not expensive cost of fix.
I sitill running 2 amd platform 1 from 2008 and one from 2009, they work as clock, they didnt stay long hour off since i get them, so maybe cooling system check it.

I have a GTX660 2GB OC and it runs ALL the latest games on HIGH or ULTRA with great FPS. Only game I'm having to lower gfx for at the moment is DayZ standalone because it's not properly optimized (I also run ARMA 2 OA on lower settings because it is a hungry beast of a game, especially in MP).

Running on Medium in MP with no lag is definitely what you should do, but SP games you can crank the graphics to the highest settings with this card.

Here's some I found on newegg.com (I don't know what site is best, but this gives decent info)

    GTX 650 1GB $109 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150612&ignorebbr=1

    GTX 650 2GB $129 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125444&ignorebbr=1

    Radeon 7770 1GB $109 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121663&ignorebbr=1

If you want more cards to choose from, this is the main page I got the info from: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...17&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

I would start by giving your PC a thorough cleaning. Blow out your video card and make sure you have proper air flow. Maybe even get a fan to blow in the case from the outside, I do. Maybe go so far as to unplug your hardware and wipe off the connectors. Make sure you have a good CPU cooling system, they are cheap and easy to upgrade. Maybe try and just get a second 9500 and run in SLI. That would be the cheapest.

Honestly, when I finally get a good working unit, I'm going to have to really resist pulling an Office Space on the computer, or resist throwing it in the fucking river.
