    Hi, guys...

I recently had to reinstall L4D2. I'm having bizarre issues relating to video... in COOP & Versus, my screen goes black and I freeze up for 10 seconds at a time. My FPS looks good, about 50ish. However, I lag out, the screen flashes, then I get back in game.

I remember this being an issue w/ me NOT having optimized settings. I thought I replicated everything, but it's not working.

Note: I could NOT get "Enable Multicore Rendering" to stay "YES" last time... and someone told me that I have to make my Shader Detail (one of those 3 options) high or it won't stay... and multicore is disabled.

    Anyhoot,

AntiAliasing is bilinear... Vertical SYNC is disabled... Paged Pool Memory is high... Shader, etc., those 3 are: High, Medium, Medium.

I forget what else I'm missing.

Either way, it's the same issue as last time.

I recently crashed to desktop with an Engine Error:

failed to lock vertex buffer in CmeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer which means DirectX (up to date,) or Paged Pool Memory. Not sure if that helps.

My video card is shit, it's an NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT 512 MB vram. Driver up-to-date.

Any suggestions? I appreciate it, thanks,

I had the same problem a while back. I later found out that it was because I had my processor over-clocked too high. My computer ran fine doing normal stuff, but when I ran the game, after a few minutes of playing it would crash. I edited my cpu settings and that fixed the problem.

Are you doing any kind of over-clocking?

And eventhough your framerate looks ok, your card could be running tired.

Freeze seems like a hardware issue. Try to run something GPU intensive like 3D Mark and see if it holds. Or connect to the Dayz server if you really want to put your graphics card to the test ;)

  4. obviously you can't use maxed settings with this card from 2008.
If it worked before try lower settings and work your way up.

i read something about changing game properties wich worked for other games
    with the same error message.
go to library, right click on L4D2, properties, set launch options, -dxlevel 80
Also certain addons can cause video related problems.

The best way to fix this is getting a new card like a 660 gtx
with this one you can run l4d2 with all settings maxed without any problems.
i just got one to replace my old radeon card.
660gtx cards are very atractive price/performance wise atm.
and you can use the geforce experience tool to get optimized settings for many games.

    TY all for the replies!!

I got some good optimization tips.

It ironically was the fact that this dumbass Radeon had the CURRENT driver installed. I reverted to one from seven months ago and it worked like a charm.

  6. yes thats a known problem with certain older cards, i also used a lower gpu driver version for my previous card.
